barren from any serialized parchment and ink publications are ‘it’ and ‘you’ while ‘i’ and ‘us’ fruitfully multiple unchecked in the daily, weekly and monthly warrens. quaint in its naiveté, objectivity was at least a clever game of cat and mouse between columnist and audience in which purported empiricism purred forth waiting to catch unsuspecting reading rodents in the claws of conjecture. what an unrefined age where opinions are brazeningly brandished as fact without so much as the artifice of impartiality…a bit of a girlfriend experience can go a long way in returning a john to pay again for servicing.

somewhere along the way a clever soul finally noticed there is no “u” in profile and boldly placed their “i” within it. copy consists of rote ad nauseum of the relationship of the perceiver to the object, an insipid exploration of a parasitic attachment to a host. the spite of the boring and bromidic has been funneled into a career in publishing and the slow decline of traditional publications corresponds to the rise of self-absorbed hacks nakedly placing themselves within the piece. print remains dead. print is dead. and we have killed it.

were it not distasteful enough that mainstream media regularly and flippantly invoke the specter of nazi germany for fun and profit, but to use a mad-lib-like organizational structure to deconstruct is utterly loathsome. take for instance the following recently articulated absurdity :

“see, when you take a little bit of truth and then you mix it with untruth, or your theory, that’s where you get people to believe. You know? It’s like proper noun. previous proper noun said a little bit of truth, and then he mixed in “statement of blame, fallacious causation, bigotry or nonsense” That’s where things get a little troublesome…”

in this instance, radio talk show host glenn beck chose to substitute “hitler” for the proper noun while the statement of blame, fallacious causation, bigotry or nonsense was replaced with “‘and it’s the jews’ fault’”. what’s great about this structure is that anything can be reduced to nonsense with this wonderful oversimplification of logic. try using “joseph smith” and “polygamy”, “donald rumsfeld” and “the rumsfeld doctrine”, “rush limbaugh” with “and it’s the democrat’s fault”, “michael moore” and “and its george bush’s fault”, or “jesus” and “do to others as you would have them do to you”. should you be so bold, insert beck into his own statement so that “glenn beck” mixes in “his own thoughts” and we all begin to worry about how we’re spending our time…

a culture of violence? the united states? certainly not! state sponsored execution, militarized political expression, pro-life murders, the sport of classmate killing and the rampant popularity of the police procedural cannot be used as evidence of a society obsessed with the infliction of abuse…no look to it’s idioms before condemning a civilization. only a culture of life could graciously embrace a phrase like “drink the kool aid” into its lexicon, a liberated society where citizens take turns being “thrown under the bus” and “rearrange the deck chairs on the titanic” for one another. lo, compassion for the living and the dead is found throughout and it is only a matter of time before we all are “writing ‘pig’ in blood on the front door”, “drowning in a new orleans attic”, and “taking a ride in the white bronco after slaying a waiter” because this is how we best express ourselves in those situations we find ourselves in our everyday lives in our life-respecting and -affirming culture.
